The suicide rate has increased enormously among youngsters in the USA in recent times. The suicide rate among youth in the age group of 10 to 24 years has shot up to 56 percent between 2007 and 2017, claimed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although the homicide death rate has decreased by 23 percent from 2017 to 2016 it increased shockingly by 18 percent through 2017. Homicides and violent deaths are the major cause of premature deaths of young people. The death rate in suicides among young adults has surpassed homicide death through 2010. The rate of youngsters dying in suicide is higher than homicide deaths said Sally Curtin, a statistician at CDC.
Ms. Curtin and her colleagues collected death certificate data from the CDC’s vital statistics systems to analyze the cause of premature deaths in young people. They found out that suicide and homicide death rate among youth was relatively low from 2000 to 2007. However, the statistics increased enormously by 6.8 percent per one Lac people, with two thousand four hundred forty-nine more suicide deaths in 2017. While, people from the age group of 10 to 24 years who had a low death rate, went high from 2007 to 2017. These findings are quite disturbing as adolescents are at high risk of suicide, said Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Benjamin Shain.
Rise in depression, access to firearms stress and drug use are the potential cause of increasing suicide rates among young adults. Even social media exposure and sleep deprivation can also play a bigger role in causing mental health conditions in teenagers. The suicide rate has significantly increased among all the age groups and communities across the USA. It has gone up to 30 percent in the past 30 years. In 2017, suicide was a major reason behind the deaths of youngsters. Homicide was the third major cause of premature death of teenagers. The authorities are taking essential initiatives to bring back the normalcy in the sudden rise in suicide death rate.
